Federico Uribe’s chandelier is a wild cacophony of golden flatware made out a substance called Dirilyte, a metal alloy harder than silver and with the same color as gold, although it has no actual gold content. Uribe’s title for this piece refers to King Midas of Greek myth, who sought to transform everything around him into gold, only to end up destroying himself and all he loved. His fate echoes in tales of ancient alchemists who, in an effort to produce gold, mixed magic and pseudo-science. Today the pursuit of gold continues this tale of destruction in the reports of miners and scientists rending the earth and ruining the environment searching for the prized ore. Uribe’s sculpture is a kind of mediation on gluttony at the table, the myriad forks, spoons, and knives exploding with kinetic energy, and provides interesting contrast with Deborah Czeresko’s Fowl, installed nearby. The work of this artist, who was born in Colombia and is now based in Miami, resists classification. Rooted in the craft of sculpture and paint, it rises from intertwining and combining everyday objects, such as cut-up pieces of pencils, colored shoelaces, pins, electrical wires, bullet shells, books, ties, and plastic waste, all in unexpected and surprising ways, but still imbued with formal references to the history and tradition of classical art.

The extravagant canvases that Julie Heffernan paints acknowledge lavish historical precedents, such as the grandly scaled paintings of the 17th-century Italian and Spanish Baroque period. The artist says, “I love complexity, and intricate forms that I can knit with. I will go to Velázquez, Van Dyck, Artemisia Gentileschi. I’m looking at Baroque artists because they are flamboyant . . . I am looking for forms that can function both symbolically and with their own personality.” Among the distinct forms Heffernan has adopted, she frequently employs the chandelier as a device that serves to create operatic compositions. They appear bursting into flames in a gilded ballroom and as glimmering bobbles that sprout from a tree of life. Heffernan’s broad array of references are transformed into new and at times unnervingly strange images. The artist says, “The chandeliers are about my brain kind of exploding and, as I am getting older, things starting to catch on fire. Now I’ve shifted my work entirely to the tortured landscape. I’m looking around for new metaphors for my own present-day experience.” Although she draws stylistic influence from historical periods, Heffernan’s thematic concerns are clearly contemporary ones that involve the crises of contemporary living, feminism, class, and motherhood.

Working with handcrafted sets and without the use of computer-generated imagery, Adrien Broom transports viewers to fantastical worlds that hearken back to the imaginative realms of our childhood. Hovering at the intersection of nature and fantasy, her work embraces the tension between civilization and wilderness. Each image Broom creates demands a wide variety of traditional theatrical techniques. In Down the Rabbit Hole, Broom and her team created massive poppies from cut, sculpted and painted foam. Throughout the image, which is steeped in a sense of the magical, distinctions blur: the children are real models but the animals are taxidermy. They gather around what seems at first glance a camp-fire, but the grass around it is made of paper, while the ethereal glow emanating from below seems to come from deep underground. Broom says, “I particularly loved the grandiosity of the chandelier, which is why I chose that room. The contrast of the artificial set with the architectural interior, especially the chandelier, which, I think looks like it could have grown from the light in the rabbit hole reflecting up to the ceiling, was everything I hoped it would be when planning the shoot.”

One critic described Mitty’s paintings of dark visions as combinations of “painterly verve and hellish beauty.” In Glistens, Lizbeth Mitty studies the technical challenges of painting light against dark. The artist focuses, here, on the most Gothic aspects of the chandelier, creating a black vision of night in which a many-armed fixture seems to almost writhe─each “arm” as sinuous as a snake. Mitty’s passages of bright color, each contrasted against her dark canvas, capture the reflective qualities of the chandelier that is this composition’s only light source. She daubs bright white on the fixture’s bowls that hold the flickering candles to suggest the reflective qualities of shimmering glass or silver. Long focused on deteriorating though formerly grand interiors as well as the less explored corners of urban architecture, the artist says, “For much of my career, scrapyards and other sites of urban devastation fascinated me as locations of organized chaos, formally beautiful, yet apocalyptic and terrifying. [But] In these new landscapes, elegance, hope, and optimism are winning the day. The cyclical nature and mutability of things in times of excess are the subliminal driving forces in these works.”

Banane Deluxe is an ephemeral work that is layered with multiple references and meanings. In Banane Deluxe the French Caribbean artist Jean-Marc Hunt moves far from the traditional and often elaborate form and function of the chandelier, instead creating a simple structure suspended from the ceiling. Comprised of three painted bicycle rims laden with bananas, the artist alludes to Marcel Duchamp’s infamous conceptual work, Bicycle Wheel. Instead of lights, his structure is festooned with rows of interlaced bananas that create a form that also recalls the famous costume of artificial bananas worn by entertainer Josephine Baker during her "Danse Sauvage" performance at the Folies Bergère in Paris, France c. 1927. Hunt also deliberately nods to the harrowing song made famous by Blues singer Billie Holiday, “Strange Fruit” (1939)—a dark metaphor describing the persistent lynchings and racism in the southern United States in the years following Emancipation. Like Gonzalez Fuenmayor, Hunt’s chandelier conjures allusions to “banana republics” and the economic exploitation of western colonialism, particularly through large-scale agricultural cultivation. Hunt allows the viewer to contemplate the inevitable nature of decay. Like a 17th century Dutch vanitas, this ephemeral piece also functions as a memento mori in real time, reminding us that all things deteriorate and die.

Kayode Ojo has been described as having a “keen eye for sumptuous austerity.” His series of ornate, commercially produced chandeliers are configured in regimented symmetry that unexpectedly creates a cool, formal Modernism. Contrasting the ornate and the austere in his juxtapositions of lavish forms with tightly-ordered configurations, Ojo creates a sense of tension in his compositions. While his sculptures refer to Minimalism in their use of repeating “building block forms,” Ojo uses multiples of manufactured objects that are much more visually elaborate, rejecting the rigidity of the forms and lines of Minimalist artists like Donald Judd. The individual chandeliers stand apart, yet merge like an ordered flock of birds into a composition in which the impact of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Ojo, known for his use of eclectic materials, often draws from mass-produced consumer products (chandeliers, music stands, bar carts, chairs, or other high-end objects) that are chosen to reflect varied backgrounds, politics, thoughts, and experiences. Ojo’s works, suffused with glinting surfaces and suggestions of consumerist desire for luxury products, seduce viewers, mirroring their role in capitalist production.
